Review : Beauty and the Mustache: A Philosophical Romance (Knitting in the City Book 4) – Penny Reid

20359781There are three things you need to know about Ashley Winston: 1) She has six brothers and they all have beards, 2) She is a reader, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Former beauty queen, Ashley Winston’s preferred coping strategy is escapism. She escaped her Tennessee small town, loathsome father, and six brothers eight years ago. Now she escapes life daily via her Amazon kindle one-click addiction. However, when a family tragedy forces her to return home, Ashley can’t escape the notice of Drew Runous— local Game Warden, reclusive mountain man, bear wrestler, philosopher, and everyone’s favorite guy. Drew’s irksome philosophizing in particular makes Ashley want to run for the skyscrapers, especially since he can’t seem to keep his exasperating opinions— or his soulful poetry, steadfast support, and delightful hands— to himself. Pretty soon the girl who wanted nothing more than the escape of the big city finds she’s lost her heart in small town Tennessee.

This is a full-length novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the fourth book in the ‘Knitting in the City’ series.

My review:

I promise to write my review and here i am. I had to read this book twice before doing it!
The first time after finishing it, i was mouth hang open, blinking a few times like Ash,…and speechless! was so overwhelmed by all of it: the writing, the characters, the story, the mood!

Back to the story, it’s was fucking brilliant, smart. Ashley came back home after eight years of absence.
After a memorable encounter with Drew « Charlie » Runous. (the twisted nipple’s gate, so funny by the way), she went to see her mother at the hospital and heard the devastated news!
Her mother is dying and only have 6 weeks to live.

Trying to process all of it, she is overwhelmed by the presence of all the beared men. She didn’t know how to manage it. I really love Ashley because she’s all that i enjoy in a female character : strong, smart, aware of her imperfections and her love for poetry and reading!
She’s so natural with people.
Beyond all the smart talk, she’s putting a wall in her relationships because she doesn’t want to get hurt. After what happened in her past (i hate her evil father, « He, who must not be named ») , it made her believe that people only saw her as piece of ass, a queen beauty without no intellect. So she’s kicking her butt to succeed and she did it!
She’s a tough woman.

Drew is wow, wow, chicka wow, wow: hot, smart, poet, musician, singer, philosopher. He definitely melt my butter!
He is a very interesting character. He’s so mysterious and take his distance with people, but he is so fucking intense, he never lied to people and direct to them. I love his relationship with Ash’s brother but especially with Bethany (Ash’s mother). He ’s so caring and he’s kind a roc of this funny and endearing family, someone who can support them through this. I have a thing for vikings or Hercule characters so i was sold! Moreover, he writes poetry! Is that a kind of guy exist? If you know one, give me his number!lol

And with Ashley’s it was wow, explosions of fireworks. Since their first meet, i can feel how they are drawn together, even if Ash is not aware.
The body language betrays them .It’s like hot and cold, a step forward and a step back, quoting Nietzsche like talking about the weather (Drew’s specialty!). It was so hot and sexy!
I really like how Drew seemed always stunned by Ashley (particularly when she can quote Nietzsche verbatim),he found his match!
Ash’s guilt for her feelings about Drew is why she tried to stay away from him even if her body said something else. How can you be focused on love when your mother is dying?

All the interactions were fantastic: Drew, her family, her knitting group.
The Winston brothers are my favorite characters : Jetro, Billy, Cletus, Beau and Duane, and Roscoe, and their middle names: well done!
All the gang were as usual fucking amazing, love how Ashley is close to Alex (Sandra’s husband).
I love how they are always involved in each story!

There were a lot a funny moments through the sadness of the story but all i can say that this book have a soul! Penny’s writing deserves to be known because she can write smart, unrequited, hacked, philosophical romance. Each book is getting better and trust me, the first one is already high level! I was totally experiencing this story, maybe too much!

I recommend it to all of lovers of EPIC ROMANCE, by a very smart, talented woman!
I want to give more than five stars, like a sky full of stars! Thank you Penny for this perfect, tremendous story!
